Handling Dental Emergencies

Prompt action from you and treatment by a quality team can make a difference in your smile after you experience a dental emergency. First, you need to know what conditions are emergencies and what you can do while awaiting dental treatment.

What Counts as a Dental Emergency?

Dental emergencies include problems that require immediate action to preserve your smile. According to the American Dental Association, emergencies include problems that could be life-threatening. It also defines urgent care issues as those problems that need quick treatment to stop pain and reduce the risk of infection.

Call us at Pristine Dentistry if you have any of the following emergency or urgent dental problems:

  • Knocked-out tooth
  • Severe tooth pain
  • Seriously cracked tooth
  • Pushed-in or dislodged tooth
  • Lost crown, filling, or other dental restoration
  • Facial swelling or other signs of an abscess
  • Serious injury to the soft tissues, such as the lips, inner cheek, or tongue

What You Should Do in a Dental Emergency

While you prepare to go to a dentist for emergency dental care, you can do some things to improve your comfort and outcome.

Knocked-Out Tooth

When you have one of your teeth knocked out if its socket, first, try to place it back into its socket. If it will not sit in its socket, save the tooth in a cup of milk. Don't wash off the tooth. Regardless of whether you can place the tooth back into the socket or not, get prompt dental attention.

Cracked Tooth

For a cracked tooth, rinse out your mouth with salt water. If you have any bleeding, hold a piece of gauze on the area until the bleeding stops. Use a cold compress on the outside of your mouth near the injured area. Get care from a same day dentist.

Severe Tooth Pain

Severe tooth pain could come from an abscess, food stuck between the teeth, or another concern. First, rinse with warm salt water and floss to remove anything between your teeth.

If flossing does not ease the pain, swallow ibuprofen or acetaminophen with water according to package directions and use a cold compress to ease pain. Do not place the medicine against your tooth or gum. See your dentist as soon as possible.

Lost Crown, Bridge, or Filling

Use over the counter dental cement to hold the lost restoration in place until you can see your dentist the same day.

Dislodged Tooth

If your tooth gets pushed deeper into the socket or moves out of place without dislodging, you need urgent dental treatment. Without moving the tooth, apply a cold compress to the outside of your mouth and get to your dentist the same day.

Same Day Dental Services

Seeing a dentist with same day services reduces the number of visits you must make for both routine and emergency care. When it comes to emergency dental care, you want same day services to stop your pain and restore your smile.

Same Day Dentist

Same day dental services include fillings, crowns, and other treatments that some dentists require secondary visits for. Our dentists at Pristine Dentistry both have training in emergency dentistry and same day crowns to give you the best urgent care when time and attention to detail matter the most.

Same Day Crowns

Only a few select dentists offer same day crowns. We at Pristine Dentistry use CEREC to produce new crowns the same day of your appointment.

If your dental emergency requires a crown, you don't have to wait for an outsourced lab. CEREC technology uses computer guidance and milling tools to produce natural-looking ceramic crowns while you wait. You can go home wearing your new crown the same day you arrive for emergency care.
